The HFi and Shelter on Social Housing

Natalie Elphicke, Chief Executive of the Housing and Finance Institute, and Polly Neate, the CEO of Shelter, recently discussed Theresa May's £2bn social housing pledge on Channel 4 News.

Natalie argued that this is not a lot of money for social housing in the grand scheme of things, equating to a very small number of additional social homes. "It is not enough, soon enough." Calling for more investment to get people on the housing ladder, for those who can afford to do so but do not have access to adequate finance.

She called for more social housing, arguing that the "experiment with temporary accommodation and the Private Rented Sector has failed", what is needed is more owner occupation and social rent.

According to Natalie, everyone needs to play their part, not just Housing Associations. Councils have been building homes for over a century and have been a bedrock for those in housing need.
